"Latin Connection" PBS FM radio
Presented by Mick & Leandro (Aka DJ Mono, from "The Palacio Brothers") on air Fridays 9:00am to 11:00am The Latin Connection, as the name suggests attempts to create a link between the abundance of Latinos here in Melbourne and their place of birth, this is why the music is community based. The program also caters for anyone interested in Latin music in general. As an English language program, it also provides an opportunity for non-latinos to find out about the backgrounds of artists and their music. From the polyrhythmic drum beats of Brazil to the panflutes of the Andes. From the 50's mambo dancehalls of Havana to contemporary Latin Jazz. A wide range of music is played on the show, including salsa, samba, merengue, cumbia, flamenco, Latin jazz, Spanish pop and rock, son, and music from the Caribbean, just to name a few styles. Samba Cine Club
Samba Cine Club is a Brazilian cultural project that happens once a month in Melbourne. It is an initiative to promote Brazilian culture through film and music. We want to go beyond the cliche en vogue of “samba, carnival, caipirinhas, naked women and soccer”. Not because we don’t like these things (we love them all!) but we feel that the stereotype is limiting in many ways, especially in artistic expression.
